Established in 1985,
CIES-ISCTE is a university research centre associated to ISCTE (University
Institute for Social Sciences, Business Studies and Technologies) and
accredited by the FCT.
It is supported by the
Multi-annual Funding Program for R&D Units, sponsored by FCT. In 2008, it
was subjected by FCT to external evaluation by an international scientific
panel and, as in earlier periodic evaluations, was classified as "excellent".
CIES main focus is on
projects of fundamental research in sociology, political science, education
studies, communication studies and urban anthropology. Most of these projects
are funded through open calls with scientific evaluation promoted by national
and European agencies/foundations.
The projects are grouped
into 5 lines of research and an intercontinental research programme, which
are more thematic lines than organisational ones. Many researchers carry out
research in more than one of the lines.
CIES' management bodies
consist of a Board of Directors, the Scientific Committee, the Supervisory
Committee and the General Assembly. The Centre also has an external
Scientific Advisory Committee made up of 5 Portuguese and foreign well-known
researchers.
CIES-ISCTE publishes since
1986 a scientific journal - Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas -
directed by a senior researcher with support of an Editorial Committee and an
International Editing Committee.
The support structures of
the Centre include the Financial and Administrative Department, the
Communication and Planning Office and the journal's editorial secretariat,
including a total of 5 staff members.
The centre is affiliated
with the European Cnsortium for Sociological Research (ECRS) and the European
Consortium for Political Research (ECPR).
The research centre is divided into
five main research lines:

Title: Ethnicity, School Trajectories and
Professional Expectations: young descendants of immigrants at the end of
compulsory schooling
Research Team: Teresa Seabra; Sandra Mateus;
Magda Nico; Elisabete Rodrigues
Abstract: In recent years the increasing
migratory pressure in Portugal and its growing demographic and cultural
importance has become an issue of general interest and wide debate. There
remains, however, inadequate scientific knowledge about the configurations
and conditions that characterize this segment of Portuguese society, one that
is considerably heterogeneous from a cultural, social and age-structure point
of view. In the field of sociology, there is a shortage of data regarding,
for example, the social composition, schooling processes and life courses of
the young descendants of immigrants in Portugal. For this reason, this
research proposes to build a stock of multidimensional information that helps
us to state the issues and allows rectification of some of the
insufficiencies ascertained.
Keywords: Youth; immigration; social
trajectories

this African second generation, particularly young people in the 15-29 years

Title: Guineans in Portugal - Ethnicity and
Integration
Research Team: Fernando Luís Machado
Abstract: This study seeks to identify the
structural conditions in Portuguese society which encourage inward migratory
flows and to analyse the impact of the presence of immigrant communities at
the economic, cultural and political level. The project focuses particularly
on the study of the community which originates from Guinea-Bissau and
analyses the following aspects of the integration of this community into
Portuguese society: modalities of access and integration into the labour
market and the employment system; dynamics of identity and acculturation;
family and marriage; co-operative movements and strategies of collective
action; second-generation immigrants.
