In late modern societies, learning has advanced to the most important and influential individual activity in the provision and shaping of life chances.

In this understanding formal educational institutions like school do not play the main role any longer. Learning takes place in many contexts, like in the family as informal learning or in youth work as non formal learning. Also, learning is not restricted to specific phases of the human life-course, like childhood and youth, but extends throughout life (lifelong learning).

The ever extending scope of learning makes self-learning and learning to learn one of the imperatives of contemporary societies. (MdBR)
