Brief description
of institution (250 words max)
|
There is an urgent need to understand population
movements at a time when former ideals of rootedness and belonging associated
with a particular nation state, are being challenged by ideas of mobility and
flexibility in a global arena. Thus, the overall objective of the research
initiative is threefold:
1) To investigate the nature of the movements in
which migrants engage
2) To study the impacts of these moves on both
sending and receiving societies including places of transit
3) To examine the ways in which migrants maneuver as
individuals, families and communities in relation to local, national and
transnational contexts of life and how these contexts become sources of
identification
